Once being one of the best players on the women's tennis tour, Gabriela Sabatini, at age 20, appeared likely to be a major force for years to come. While somewhat lost in the shadows of Steffi Graf and Monica Seles, she improved steadily and her more aggressive serve and volley approach had brought her great success in 1991. Defeating Graf in the finals of both the U.S. Open and Virginia Slims in 1990, Sabatini knocked the West German from the top spot in the computer rankings, which Grad had held for a record 186 consecutive weeks.
